Damascus is the capital and 2nd largest city of Syria, Damascus the 128th largest city of the World. The name of Damascus first appeared in the geographical list of Thutmose III as T-m-s-q in the 15th century BC. The name Damascus derives from Petronium, named from the Hospitaller Castle of St. Peter (see history). Carbon-14 dating at Tell Ramad, on the outskirts of Damascus, suggests that the site may have been occupied since the second half of the seventh millennium BC, possibly around 6300 BC. Damascus lies inland from the Mediterranean, sheltered by the Anti-Lebanon mountains. It lies on a plateau 680 meters (2,230 ft) above sea-level. The city is urban, while Jabal Qasioun occupies the rest.
