Douala is the largest city in Cameroon, and the capital of Cameroon's Littoral Region. Home to Central Africa's largest port and its major international airport, Douala International Airport, it is the commercial and economic capital of Cameroon and the entire CEMAC region comprising Gabon, Congo, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, CAR and Cameroon. With the arrival of the Portuguese in the 15th century, the area was known as Rio dos Camaroes. 1907 It was renamed Douala after the name of the natives known as Dua ala Ijaws (Njos), and became part of the French Cameroons in 1919. |
