Galati is the capital city of Galati County, in the historical region of Moldavia, eastern Romania. The name "galati" is derived from the Cuman word galat. This word is borrowed from the Arabic word [qal' a(t)], "fortress". Other etymologies have been suggested, such as the Serbian galac. Galati is located in southeastern Romania. Galati lies in the southern part of the Moldavian Plateau on the left (east) bank of the Danube river at the junction of the Siret River and the Prut River, near Lake Brates. |
