Sao Luis is the 17th largest city of Brazil, the 42nd largest city of Latin America and the wwth largest city of the World. It is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Maranhio. The city is located on Ilha de Sao Luis (Saint Louis' Island) in the Ba�a de S�o Marcos (Saint Mark's Bay), an extension of the Atlantic Ocean which forms the estuary of Pindar�, Mearim, Itapecuru and other rivers. Originally the town was a large village of the Tupinamb� tribe. The first Europeans to see it were the French, in 1612, who intended to make it the center of a colony named Equinoctial France. |
