Turin / Torino is the 4th largest city of Italy, and the 28th largest city of Europe. It is the capital of the Piedmont Region. The city is in the south of the Alps and in the north of the hills of Monferrato. Four rivers pass by the city among them the most important is the Po. The smaller rivers are the Dora Riparia, the Stura di Lanzo and the Sangone. Turin is divided into x districts. According to the legend, the city was founded in 18 BC as "Castra Tauriniruma". After the end of the Roman Empire the city was conquered by the Lombards and then the Franks. 942 the Countship of Turin was founded. At the end of the 16th century the city was annexed by the Duchy of Savoy whose capital it became in 1563. 1861 the city became the capital of the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Italy.
