Campo Grande is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul in the Center-West region of the country. The city is nicknamed Cidade Morena ("swarthy city" in Portuguese) because of the reddish-brown colour of the region's soil. Campo Grande started as a small village founded in 1877 by farmers Jose Antonio Pereira and Manoel Vieira de Sousa, who came from Minas Gerais just after the end of the Paraguayan War. Campo Grande has a highland tropical climate, semi-humid, hot, and notably seasonal, with a dry winter season from June through September. |
