Aix en Provence is the 21rd largest city of France located in the region Provence Alpes Cote d´Azur and of the Departement Bouches du Rhone. The city is located 30 km north of Marseille near the Mediterranian Sea. Aix en Provence is divided into 3 cantons and includes several bordering villages like Les Milles, Luynes, Palette, Le Tholonet, Puyricard, Coutheron The name Aix en Provence comes from Aquae Sextiae. Aix was founded in 122 BC by the Roman Consul Sextius Calvinus. 1487, with the rest of Province Aix became part of France. For a long time Aix was the capital of Provence. The Impressionist Paul Cezanne (1839 - 1906) lived and painted in the city. Today part of the cities activities are based on Education with several schools and universities based there. The Aix Festival attracts many people every summer. |
