Montpellier (in French with double ll unlike Montpelier Vermont USA) is the 8th largest city of France and the capital of the Languedoc Roussillon region in the South of France. It is also the Prefecture o the Departement Herault. The city is located on Hills only 10 km from the Mediterranian Sea. Montpellier is divided into 7 quartiers. The name Montpellier comes from "Mont pélé" which means naked hill due to poor vegetation. The name Montpellier appears for the first time on 986 November 26 ´when the count Bernard de Melgueil offers the territory. Over the years the territory becomes a stronghold including a castle and a church laying the grounds to the city of Montpellier. in the 10th century the city becomes a trading center. The city is part of France since 1349 when the French King Philipp VI bought it from the Kings of Aragon. |
