Nancy in the very East of France and the 35th largest city of the country. It is the historical capital of the region Lorraine and the actual capital (prefecture) of the Departement Meurte et Moselle. The city is located on the Mosel River. Nancy is divided into 4 cantons. It is part of the Grand Nancy. The name Nancy comes from "Nanciacum", a small fortified town build in 1050. 1737, Stanislas Leszczyński, former king of Poland and father in law of the French King Louis XV (due to his marriage with Marie Leszczyńska) receives the Duchy of Lorraine. As an Monarch he builds an impressive square in the honor of the king of France, a square which later is called Place Stanislas. Stanislas is also in the history of the Phone Book of the World, as he came to visit Louis Leon Pajot 1766 after the death of Duke Stanislas, Lorraine became a French Province with Nancy as the capital. After World War 2 when the French Region was established the capital became Metz. 1900 is born in Nancy the artisitc mouvement "Art Nouveau" around the School of Nancy. The mos famous artisit are Emile Galle, Louis Majorelle, Victor Prouve, Eugene Vallin and Antonin Daum. Nancy was the home of Michel Bouriez. |
