Bonn is the 19th largest city of Germany, and the 81th largest city of Europe. Bonn is the 9th largest city of the German State North Rhine Westfalia (Nordrhein Westfalen NRW). Bonn was the capital of Weste Germany from 1949 - 1990 and now has the statut of a "Bundes Stadt". After the transfer of the German Parliament, Chancellery and Presidency the city remains a center of politics and state administration as about half of the government job remained. The city is located on the River Rhine 20 km south of Cologne and north of the famous Rhine Castles, the last of them the Godesburg is in Bad Godesberg in the southern part of the City. Elevation 45,60 m - 195,30 m (Paffelsberg in the Siebengebirge) Bonn is divided into 4 districts: Bonn, Beul, Hardtberg and the beautiful Bad Godesberg. Bonn was founded in 12 BC. 1949 Bonn became the capital of West Germany. 1969 the independant cities Bad Godesberg and Beul were annexed by Bonn. 1990 Bonn lost capital status and became Bundesstadt. As a "Bundesstadt" Bonn is the home of some of the German Government including 6 Ministeries: Ministery of Education, Ministery of Defense, Ministery of Agriculture Ministry of Economic Cooperation, Ministery of Environment, Ministery of Health, Bundeskartellamt and Bundesrechnungshof |
